Volkswagen is investing up to 200 million in batteries

The Volkswagen Group is increasing its stake in QuantumScape and investing up to a further $200 million in the US battery specialist. The aim is to advance the joint development of solid cell technology. In the future, solid-state batteries are expected to significantly increase ranges and further shorten charging times. "We are making technological progress with our partner QuantumScape. The additional investment will sustainably strengthen and accelerate our joint development work," says Thomas Schmall, CEO of Volkswagen Group Components, which has end-to-end responsibility for the battery. The Volkswagen Group and QuantumScape have also been working together in a joint venture since 2018 to prepare for large-scale production of solid-state batteries.

The solid-state battery cell is considered the most promising approach for electromobility in the next generation. With the same size as a current battery pack, the solid-state battery should enable electric ranges that are on a par with conventional drives. At the same time, the charging time should be significantly shortened.
