A third fewer new car registrations in the first quarter of 2020

In the first quarter of 2020, the number of new passenger car registrations (54,680 vehicles) fell by 32.4% compared to the same period in 2019.

Although, according to Statistics Austria, declines in new registrations were already reported in January (-9.1%) and February (-10.9%), the sharp decline in the quarter can be traced back to March 2020 with 66.7% fewer cars - due to the effects of the Corona crisis. From January to March 2020, new registrations of gasoline-powered cars (share: 46.1%) fell by 42.7% and those of diesel-powered cars (share: 39.0%) fell by 32.3%. Among new registrations of alternatively powered cars, there were increases for cars with gasoline hybrid drives (+110.7%) and for cars with diesel hybrid drives (+82.5%). Passenger cars powered by pure natural gas increased almost fourfold (+273.1%). The number of cars with electric drives fell by 4.5% to 2,428 new registrations. 
The car brands with the most new registrations were VW (share: 16.1%), Skoda (share: 9.7%) and Seat (share: 7.6%). All top 10 passenger car brands recorded double-digit declines compared to Q1 2019: Mercedes -10.0%, Hyundai -11.2%, BMW -14.3%, Skoda -24.9%, Audi -26.4%, Seat -29.3%, VW -37.5%, Renault -41.6%, Ford -45.8% and Opel -46.8%.
