Gas stations as local suppliers

The Trade Association of the Petroleum Industry (FVMI) has published its current gas station statistics, which differentiate between two large groups of gas stations: The so-called 1,352 major-branded service stations include the brands of the FVMI member companies BP, Eni, JET, OMV and Shell. The other group with 1,381 gas stations is made up of numerous other gas station brands such as Turmöl, Genol, Avia and A1. What's interesting is that in a ten-year comparison, the number of major-branded gas stations has fallen by around 13%, while the number of other gas stations has increased by around 34%. “In addition to the 24/7 supply of fuel and service offerings in metropolitan areas and on main traffic routes, gas stations in rural regions with their shops also play an important role as local suppliers,” explains Hedwig Doloszeski, Managing Director of the FVMI.

More shops, fewer bistros

The distribution among the 1,352 major-branded gas stations is as follows: 322 Eni, 265 Shell, 257 BP, 211 OMV, 159 JET and 138 Avanti (OMV). Of these gas stations, 1,152 have a shop and 853 have a bistro. The number of shops increased slightly in 2020 (2019: 1,143), while the number of bistros decreased (2019: 903). 402 major-branded gas stations, around a third, are open around the clock. The number of motorway filling stations (excluding expressways) remained constant at 72 in 2020. These offer comprehensive, round-the-clock service in the shop, bistro and sanitary areas, particularly to transit traffic.

Alternative fuels

In 2020, the number of electricity charging options at domestic gas stations remained constant at 71 stations, compared to a strong increase in the past seven years, 50 of which are major-branded gas stations and the majority are fast or ultra-fast chargers. In 2014, the number of e-filling stations was 9. CNG (natural gas) can be filled up at 137 gas stations, of which 117 are major-branded service stations, and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas or autogas) can be filled at 41 gas stations, 23 of which are major-branded. The tank can currently be filled with hydrogen at five OMV stations.
