Shock absorber with built-in copy protection

The shock absorber specialist Bilstein, which is part of the German industrial group Thyssenkrupp, has developed the automatic damping force adjustment DampTronic The electromagnetically adjustable damping system automatically adapts the chassis to curves and bumps, thereby significantly increasing vehicle stability. In order to meet the special requirements of luxury sports cars, Bilstein entered into close development cooperation with the manufacturers of the new Maserati MC20 and the Porsche 911 (992), which were the first to be equipped with the new DampTronic X shock absorbers. The special thing about this: Should aftermarket replacement parts and performance upgrades follow later, Bilstein supports almost all factory features without exception. This means that Bisltein also secures the pole position in the aftermarket, because the development effort is far too great for third-party manufacturers if a technology is not already mastered by the original equipment activities.

Comfort and sportiness

The heart of Bilstein's patented technology is an electromagnetically controllable, separate bypass for the damping medium. This allows the required damping forces to be adjusted to the requirements determined by the central control unit in just a few milliseconds. The control concept calculates and adjusts the damping several hundred times per second depending on the driving situation and wheel-selective, thereby increasing agility as well as driving comfort and safety. Marc-Raphael Stratmann, technical project manager at Bilstein: “We have the only internal system on the market that works with pilot-controlled pressure relief valves in both the rebound and compression stages.” Conclusion: The system offers a wide range between comfort and tight, sporty tuning. The Bilstein developers are therefore certain: Simply reproducing or imitating such a complex system without OE knowledge and the necessary patents is almost impossible.
