This is how you transport a Christmas tree
Oh Christmas tree: The ARBÖ gives tips on how best to transport Christmas trees by car and what to avoid.

This is how you transport a Christmas tree
They make children's eyes shine and make Christmas really festive. First of all, it is important to bring the Christmas trees home safely and, above all, correctly.
The Christ child and Santa Claus must also adhere to the legal regulations for the transport of goods: “The same regulations apply as for any other transported goods,” states the ARBÖ in a pre-Christmas broadcast. So that there is no “nice gift” before Christmas Eve, the motorists' club shows how the fir tree is transported properly.
A fine of up to 5,000 euros
Properly securing loads is crucial – this also applies to the Christmas tree. A tree that has become independent is not only a danger to your own safety, but also to that of other road users. "In addition, improper transport can result in penalties of up to €5,000 and a point being noted in the driver's license register. Problems with insurance are also inevitable if an accident occurs and the load is not secured properly," explains ARBÖ legal expert Martin Echsel.
When transporting on the roof, the legally required labeling must be observed. If the load protrudes more than one meter above the front or rear part of the vehicle, this must be clearly visible on a board. The dimensions of the board must be 25 x 40 cm and marked with a 5 cm wide red reflective border. Even if the treetop protrudes from a station wagon and exceeds the meter measure, such marking must be made. Furthermore, a red reflector must be installed in poor visibility conditions (twilight, fog, rain, snow).
The ARBÖ tips for the right transport:
• If the Christmas tree is transported on the roof, it must be securely lashed and the tip should point backwards. If the Christmas tree is also in a net, this ensures even more security.
• If smaller trees are transported in the interior of the car, it must also be ensured that the tree is secured. It is important to ensure that the driver's view is not impaired - there must be good all-round visibility and you should not see any green when looking in the rear-view mirror.
• The handbrake and gear lever must be easy to operate.
• Adjust the speed and store the fir tree sideways in the car: In the event of an abrupt braking process, the Christmas tree can become a dangerous projectile.
• If smaller trees are transported in the trunk or on the folded down back seat, an old blanket protects the interior from resin stains.
