With the Clepa Awards, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers and Deloitte annually honor companies that develop innovative solutions for markets and society. In the “Safety” category, Continental’s achievements in protecting vulnerable road users were awarded first place: The company’s warning system, which was developed together with Ride Vision, protects the lives of motorcyclists through the use of two cameras and artificial intelligence. “The award is a great recognition of our comprehensive know-how in vehicle electronics and particularly recognizes the work and commitment of our global development teams,” says Nikolai Setzer, CEO of Continental AG and Chairman of the Automotive Board.

Assistant saves lives

Compared to a car, a motorcycle is 28 times more likely to have an accident. Until now, it was technically almost impossible to electronically record and reliably interpret complex traffic situations with the highly dynamic driving behavior of motorcycles. Now Continental's solution provides a solution: The innovative system is based on two cameras, each directed to the front and rear, which do justice to the dynamics of motorcycles, especially in inclined positions. The camera data is analyzed and interpreted using AI; the algorithms distinguish between critical and therefore potentially dangerous and non-critical traffic situations. If there is a risk of a forward collision, a cross-traffic accident or if there is another vehicle in the motorcycle's blind spot, the driver is warned in good time. The system outputs the warnings either visually in the mirrors or via an audio signal in the helmet headset, so that the driver can initiate braking or evasive maneuvers in good time. In this way, Continental addresses the three main causes of motorcycle accidents – rear-end collision, cross-traffic accident, blind spot accident – and significantly increases safety for motorcyclists as vulnerable road users.
