Schaeffler opens factory for e-mobility

Schaeffler produces components and systems for electrified drive trains on a total of 15,000 square meters in Szombathely. With the new plant, the company meets the highest standards of sustainability. The electricity is generated in photovoltaic systems that produce up to 4,000 tons of CO annually2-Save emissions. The wastewater is recycled, heat pumps are used to recover heat, intelligent heating and cooling management as well as energy-saving LED lighting with intelligent control ensure high energy efficiency. Schaeffler wants CO2 worldwide from 20302-neutral production, the new factory was certified gold by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Factory for tomorrow

The production of components and systems such as electric motors or hybrid transmissions follows the “factory for tomorrow” principle. The Szombathely II plant has a high degree of automation; the halls are modular and completely digitalized. Sensitive production processes for assemblies such as stators, rotors and the integration of magnets for synchronous and asynchronous machines require a high level of purity. Automated production lines and the extensive use of robots guarantee these standards. By 2023, the company wants to increase the annual capacity at the site to 800,000 products in multi-shift operation. Between 2026 and 2029, an annual target of 1.8 million manufactured products for premium partners in the automotive industry should be achieved. "From 2022, we expect the Schaeffler Group to have an annual order intake of 2-3 billion euros in the corporate sector. Szombathely will make an important contribution here as a competence center in close connection with our lead plant for e-mobility in Bühl," says Jochen Schröder, head of the e-mobility division at Schaeffler AG.
