Refinishing: Be careful when choosing the type of paint

Die Farbtonfindung über VIN ist praktisch, aber nur eine Richtschnur - überprüfen muss es der Lackierer.

In theory everything is wonderful: the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a kind of fingerprint of a car. It provides information about the manufacturer, the series, body shape, engine and equipment when delivered from the factory. The type of paint is also shown using the color code assigned to the vehicle. When calculating a refinish, the type of paint - an automatic preset for established data providers such as Audatex, DAT and Schwacke - determines the repair process to be carried out based on the refinish manufacturer system used in the body and paint shop. The type of paint combines the properties of paint layer structure, color, level of gloss and paint technology and thus influences the determination of repair costs for a vehicle refinish (labor time and material costs).

The expert is in demand

However, if you think you can always get a correct repair cost calculation at the push of a button, you are wrong. Because things are not that simple in practice. The VIN does not provide 100% accurate information about factory multi-coat and special paintwork. If the body is repainted after the VIN has been assigned, the type of paint will no longer correspond to the original delivery condition from the factory. Sometimes the color classification at the factory is simply wrong. And finally, refinishing in accordance with paint manufacturer guidelines is often more complex than factory painting.

For all of these reasons, the VIN query related to the type of paint in the calculation systems is to be viewed as a non-binding service. This presetting must be checked by the painting specialist on site, adjusted, implemented specifically for the paint manufacturer and calculated according to effort.
