Tires for the sun chariot
The Sonnenwagen Aachen team will compete in the newly created “Solar Challenge Morocco 2021” in October 2021 with its Sonnenwagen 3, which rolls on Bridgestone Ecopia tires.

The students from RWTH and FH Aachen are working on sustainable mobility solutions and actually wanted to prepare for the World Solar Challenge 2021 (WSC) in Australia. However, due to the pandemic, plans were changed and a new Solar Challenge was quickly set up in Morocco. Now another solar car is being built that will compete for the title. All vehicle components must be ideally coordinated with one another, because only innovative and highly efficient solar cars that can withstand Morocco's challenges have a chance of winning. In Morocco, the participants can expect a route of around 2,500 kilometers, on which they will probably compete with ten other teams. This makes the route one of the longest solar races in the world. Similar to Australia, there will be a Cruiser and a Challenger class. The team that completes the route fastest wins the latter. The “Solar Challenge Morocco” will take place from October 23rd to 30th, 2021 and runs from Agadir via M’Hamid to Merzouga and back.
Fascination with technology
“We are driven by the fascination for new technologies and the special challenges of solar car racing,” explains Simon Quinker, second chairman of the Sonnenwagen Association. “The focus of our project is the development and implementation of our Covestro Sonnenwagen, which is intended to reveal innovations in the areas of lightweight construction, solar energy and driving strategy.” The enthusiastic students want to show that novel and sustainable mobility concepts are already possible and implementable. “In Bridgestone we have found the partner we wanted for our tires,” says Quinker. “The students from Aachen have been interested in our premium tires for years and we are therefore even more pleased that we will be supporting them with the right tires at the Solar Challenges in Belgium and Morocco,” says Torsten Claßen, Director Consumer Products Bridgestone Central Europe. “Our specially developed Ecopia tires with ologic technology are used here, which are particularly energy efficient and have optimized rolling resistance – making them an ideal companion for the Sonnenwagen 3.”
