Rattan furniture for series cars
With the standard use of “karuun”, a Nature Tech material made of rattan, the Chinese car manufacturer Nio is using a new, sustainable material for the first time.

Rattan furniture for series cars
For the European market, sales of the Nio ET7 electric car are planned for 2022. For the first time in the world, the innovative material “karuun” is used for the interior, which is based on the traditional wicker material rattan and has been transformed into a high-tech material using a patented process. The plastic alternative karuun impresses with its aesthetic appearance, which is thanks to the unique, continuous capillary structure of the rattan plant. Another advantage that karuun can claim during production: the cultivation of rattan as a raw material contributes to the preservation of tropical rainforests and secures long-term incomes for the population in Southeast Asia.
Material with potential
Nio was the first to discover the potential of the Nature Tech material karuun in automobile construction - also with regard to the goal of shaking up the young electric car industry with smart ideas. The ET7 is the first production car in which the sustainable plastic alternative karuun is used in 14 parts of the interior. "Other renowned car brands have tested our Nature Tech material extensively and are convinced of the properties and our bio-economic philosophy. The resulting demand is very pleasing for us," says Felix Wurster, CEO at karuun, with satisfaction. The Allgäu-based entrepreneur develops and produces Nature Tech materials for the automotive and consumer goods industries as well as for ecological construction projects.
