PwC study: Trend towards car sharing

The current automotive study by PwC “Eascy – Five trends transforming the automotive industry” shows that new “car sharing” concepts could reduce the number of vehicles in Europe from 280 to 200 million by 2030.

However, due to more intensive use, the cars would have to be replaced much more frequently than before. “As a result of the automotive revolution, many rules that the industry has become accustomed to for decades are being turned upside down,” explains Horst Bernegger, partner and automotive expert at PwC Austria.

Today's norm, that most people drive their own car, will be just one mobility concept among many in a few years. The study assumes that by 2030 more than one in three kilometers driven will be based on one of the many forms of “sharing”.

According to the PwC scenario, by 2030 the car itself will take the wheel for four out of ten kilometers driven. 55 percent of all new vehicles could be electric cars, while the conventional combustion engine will slowly die out.
