Porsche prize for truck camera
The Ferdinand Porsche Prize of the TU Vienna is awarded every two years for outstanding achievements in automotive technology. Uwe Baake, Head of Product Development at Daimler Trucks, and Werner Lang, Managing Director of the Lang Group, jointly developed an electronic rear-view mirror for trucks that is intended to make turning and maneuvering safer. Instead of a rear-view mirror, portrait format screens are installed on the A-pillars inside the vehicle, which show images from cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle. The image detail can be adapted to the driving situation and blind spots are avoided. The highly sensitive cameras also improve visibility at night or in bad weather. Using the new technology is so similar to the conventional side mirror that no adjustment period is required. In addition, guide lines or distance warnings can be displayed on the screen to better estimate distances. When reversing, another camera perspective is automatically switched on. TU Rector Sabine Seidler presented the Ferdinand Porsche Prize, worth 50,000 euros, together with Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, and Hans Michel Piëch, Member of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG. Since the two award winners were unable to attend, his employee Stephan Kramb accepted the award on behalf of Uwe Baake, while his representative Jan Snel accepted the award for Werner Lang.
