Popcorn effect in electric cars

The number of newly registered electric cars in Austria rose by a total of 98% in July, August and September 2020 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, analyzes the current edition of the “E-Mobility Sales Review” by PwC Autofacts and Strategy&, PwC's strategy consultancy. This means that the electric share of total new registrations in this country reached almost 17% at the end of September. The biggest drivers of growth in Austria are PHEVs, with a significant increase of 407% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. But full hybrids also increased by 89% compared to the third quarter of 2019.
Courageous manufacturers and suppliers
The reasons for this lie in the increasingly mature products and an expanded range, optimized sales processes and increasingly cheaper acquisition and maintenance costs of full hybrids (Hybrid), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and battery-electric vehicles (BEV), additionally driven by government funding and the high public interest in electromobility. “The strategic courage of those manufacturers and suppliers who set the course for electromobility in a timely manner and with full commitment is paying off twice in the crisis environment in the form of increasing volumes and market shares,” comments Peter Trögel, automotive expert and director at Strategy& Austria, on the Q3 results.
