According to Statistics Austria, 24,784 new cars were registered in July 2020. This corresponds to a minus of 21.1%.

There were 37.8% fewer new registrations for gasoline-powered cars (share: 44.2%) and 19.3% fewer for diesel-powered cars (share: 38.3%). Growth was recorded by alternatively powered cars with petrol hybrid drives (+169.2% or +1,604 new registrations), diesel hybrid drives (+83.9% or +308 new registrations), electric drives (+49.6% or +353 new registrations) and cars with pure natural gas drives (+48.6% or +17 new registrations). Among the ten most important brands, new registrations of Skoda (+8.0%), Renault (+7.0%) and Mercedes (+4.5%) increased. There were declines in July 2020 at VW (-30.1%), Hyundai (-23.2%), Peugeot (-22.1%), Audi (-21.7%), BMW (-15.1%), Ford (-10.9%) and Seat (-9.1%). For two-wheelers, more motorcycles (+21.2%) were newly registered, but fewer motorbikes (-9.6%).
January to July 2020: a third fewer cars
In the calendar year 2020 so far (January to July), 137,571 cars were newly registered, which means a decrease of 33.6% compared to the same period last year. New registrations of gasoline-powered cars fell by 44.0% to 63,706, and of diesel vehicles by 34.1% to 52,387. In contrast, increases were observed for alternatively powered cars for cars with petrol hybrid drives (+95.1%), diesel hybrid drives (+59.8%) and electric drives (+4.5%).
