New car registrations: Finally a plus again!

Die Lager sind zwar immer noch gefüllt, im September haben die Neuwagenverkäufe aber angezogen.

“In September, new car registrations increased for the first time in the Corona year 2020.” With this statement, Tobias Thomas, General Director of Statistics Austria, sums it up: In the past month, 22,162 passenger cars (passenger cars) were newly registered in Austria, 5.3% more than in the same period last year. The total number of new registrations of motor vehicles (motor vehicles) rose by 14.9% to 31,903 compared to September 2019. Compared to the previous month of August 2020, this corresponds to an increase of 3.4%.

There was strong growth in large-capacity vans and minibuses, but also in sports cars and SUVs. “Here, the changes to the motor-related insurance tax that came into force on October 1st have led to preferential purchases,” explains Thomas. New registrations of motorhomes rose more than sevenfold in September. “In addition to the insurance tax, the corona-related trend towards camping holidays is visible here,” continued Thomas.

Since the calculation of the engine-related insurance tax will change from October 1, 2020 and not only the performance of the combustion engine, but also the CO2-Emissions are used for the calculation, above-average increases were registered for large-capacity vans (+158.2%), minibuses (+129.2%), sports cars (+91.3%) and off-road vehicles or SUVs (+15.0%) in September. For mobile homes, new registrations rose by +639.6%. In the calendar year to date, the number of newly registered motorhomes increased by almost half (+46.0%) to 2,310. This also corresponds to this year's trend of increasingly spending the night on campsites (from January to August 2020 there was an increase of 25.6% in overnight stays by domestic guests in Austria).

Minus 30 percent since the beginning of the year

Of course, the annual balance remains deep red overall: In the first nine months of 2020, 180,639 cars were newly registered on the road in Austria, which is 30.1% less than in the same period last year. Of the new car registrations, 37.1% were registered by private vehicle owners, the rest (62.9%) were registered by legal entities, companies or local authorities. In total, there were 263,574 new vehicle registrations from January to September, 24.4% less than in the same period last year.

Purely electrically powered cars achieved a share of 5.0%, an increase in new registrations of 21.1% to 8,942. Petrol hybrid cars (share: 9.1%) increased by 94.7% to 16,398 vehicles, cars with diesel hybrid technology (share: 2.6%) increased by 79.9% to 4,768. The number of cars powered by pure natural gas rose by 13.2% to 326. There were fewer new registrations than in the same period last year for gasoline-powered cars (share: 45.3%; -42.0%) and diesel-powered cars (share: 37.9%; -30.5%).
