Opel is going completely electric
Opel's electrification offensive is entering a new phase: The traditional German brand is currently not only expanding its portfolio of electrified models, but is also relying entirely on battery-electric vehicles in Europe from 2028. Opel is also entering the world's largest automobile market, China - as a purely electric brand. In addition, the celebrates legendary manta a comeback as a purely electric car.
“Opel will only offer electric vehicles in the core market of Europe from 2028,” said CEO Michael Lohscheller at the digital Stellantis Electrification Day (“EV Day 2021”). "This underlines our brand's commitment to electromobility. The future of the automotive industry is electric - and Opel is part of this movement. We are on the way to reinventing Opel and developing into a young, green and global brand," Lohscheller continued. “Opel is moving from ‘cold’ to ‘cool.’ We are heading towards a CO2-neutral future, because CO2 is the new currency in our industry.”
In addition, the final decision has now been made to bring the Opel brand back to China. Further details will be published in due course. "We promised that Opel would go global - and we are delivering. China is the largest automotive market in the world and we are sure that we will grow profitably there. Chinese customers can look forward to our products and our emotional German brand," said Lohscheller.
Lohscheller also announced that Opel will reinvent the legendary Manta after the brand received a lot of positive feedback when the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD was introduced. "The Manta is a real icon in our brand's history and an inspiration for its future. We will have a new Manta in series production by the middle of the decade. Purely electric, of course," he says.
Opel is in the middle of a major electrification offensive: the brand is already offering nine electrified models this year, and by 2024 all models will also be available in an electrified version.
