The ÖAMTC tested 31 winter tires measuring 225/40 R18. While all premium models received a “good” rating, eleven tires failed with “not enough”. The strong differences in wetness and safety are particularly critical.

ÖAMTC: Every third winter tire fails the test

In the ÖAMTC's latest winter tire test, 31 current models were tested in the Premium, Quality and Budget categories. All six premium tires achieved a “good” rating. Three of the eleven tire models from the “quality tires” segment only achieved “sufficient”.
The eleven budget tires mostly performed poorly - eleven models received a rating of “not sufficient”. The Syron Everest 2 in particular showed extreme weaknesses: strong on snow, but unsafe on dry and wet roads. In the wet braking test, the difference between the best tire (Goodyear, 31.7 meters) and the worst (Syron, 47.1 meters) was more than 15 meters. Most of the quality tires scored “satisfactory,” but three only scored “satisfactory.”
