Sustainable electric motors
The declared goal of the three partners Renault Group, Valeo and Valeo Siemens eAutomotive is to use their collective know-how to develop an electric drive that provides more power with lower energy requirements. Each of the cooperation partners will contribute their expertise to the two key components of the electric motor: the rotor and the stator. Renault will develop and produce the rotor technology for the synchronous motor. The focus is on avoiding the use of rare earths and improving power output. In addition, Renault will take over the overall architecture for the Renault Group's all-in-one engine. Valeo and Valeo Siemens eAutomotive will contribute to the development of the stator and also produce it. Valeo's many years of experience in copper wire assembly enables a higher copper density in the stator, which increases performance while maintaining the same energy requirements.
From 2027, the Renault Group, Valeo and Valeo Siemens eAutomotive are planning series production of a 200 kW electric motor, which will then for the first time work without rare earths. Production of the engine will take place at the Renault Group site in Cléon in Normandy, northern France. “The partnership once again demonstrates that Renault is at the forefront of the automotive electric revolution while anchoring the emerging value chain in France,” said Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group. “The strategic partnership will take electromobility a big step forward,” emphasizes Christophe Périllat, CEO of Valeo. “The rare earth-free electric motors developed together with Renault Group will meet the strictest environmental requirements and the highest performance standards.”
