Mewa relies on hydrogen trucks
Hydrogen instead of CO2: Mewa Textilmanagement has installed a hydrogen truck from Hyundai in Switzerland and uses it to supply its customers with zero emissions.

Mewa relies on hydrogen trucks
Mewa takes on a pioneering role in the areas of sustainability and ecology. The company is currently one of 20 selected companies across Europe that have one of the world's first hydrogen-powered trucks in daily use. Recently, the automobile manufacturer Hyundai handed over the keys to the first hydrogen truck “Xcient Fuel Cell”. This is now on Swiss roads and supplies Mewa customers emission-free.
Emission-free mobility in a closed circuit
Hydrogen is currently considered worldwide to be the most important energy source of the future. An innovative hydrogen program is already a reality in Switzerland. “The concept of using hydrogen for trucks is a world premiere for us, because Mewa is so far the only company in German-speaking countries that is taking part in this project,” says Bernd Feketeföldi, commercial director at Mewa Austria. He adds: “We are very proud to be one of the hydrogen pioneers and of course hope that approval for Austrian roads will soon be possible.”
Water vapor instead of CO2
The use of green, CO2-neutral hydrogen makes this project unique. CO is used to produce it2-neutral electricity from hydroelectric power plants is used - the truck's emissions therefore consist exclusively of pure water vapor. According to Feketeföldi, this sustainable cycle fits perfectly with Mewa's new distribution strategies. “The daily delivery to our customers is currently inevitably leading to CO2emission," explains the Mewa manager. "This CO2We would like to sustainably reduce emissions from our fleet. Mewa does not rely on CO2-reduced bridging technologies, but on CO2-free future technologies like hydrogen.”
As a European textile service provider, Mewa has been committed to the reusable principle and thus to the strategy of sustainable trade and respectful treatment of nature for 113 years. A hydrogen truck that picks up and delivers reusable cleaning cloths and work clothes fits perfectly into the fleet.
Hyundai is the first manufacturer to offer a heavy-duty series commercial vehicle that runs on hydrogen. With their storage capacity, the seven hydrogen tanks ensure a range of more than 400 km. Thanks to the CO2 and emission-free technology of hydrogen vehicles, Mewa is taking another important step closer to its goal of an ecological fleet. "Approximately 65 tons of CO2 are saved per truck per year. This truck is the core of an extraordinary cycle and therefore an important key to emission-free transport," says Mark Freymüller, CEO of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility.
