Mercedes knows no crisis

Mercedes-Benz Cars sold exactly 590,999 cars worldwide in the first quarter of 2021. That was 22.3 percent more than in the same period last year. Retail sales were driven by positive dynamics on the Chinese and US markets.

In the Asia-Pacific region, Mercedes-Benz sales rose by 46.6 percent and in China by as much as 60.1 percent, setting a new sales record of 222,520 vehicles delivered there. For comparison: 88,318 units were sold in North America in the first quarter, which corresponds to a sales increase of 12.5 percent.

In Europe, there were severe setbacks in individual markets, especially in the German home market, where sales fell by more than 15 percent, which is obviously due to the corona crisis. Overall, however, deliveries in the European region were still slightly above the previous year's level (+1.8 percent) despite the lockdown measures in many markets.

smart and Stromer are trendy

The smart brand was able to grow strongly worldwide by 65.9 percent, although a certain base effect comes into play here, as smart is a niche product. Almost 10,000 units were newly registered worldwide in the quarter. Mercedes recorded high customer demand for plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles (xEVs). The global xEV share of Mercedes-Benz Cars sales was around 10 percent with around 59,000 units, including more than 16,000 fully electric cars. In Europe, more than one in four Mercedes-Benz and smart cars sold was an xEV.

The EQA presented in January also met with a positive response from customers. “Around 20,000 orders for the EQA are great feedback from our customers and a promising start to our Mercedes EQ year 2021,” says Britta Seeger, who is responsible for sales as a member of the board of directors of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG. The first deliveries of the EQA to customers began at the end of March. With the EQS, EQB and EQE, three more Mercedes-EQ world premieres will take place in 2021. This means that the current portfolio of six fully electric cars at Mercedes-Benz Cars is being continuously expanded.
