How well and evenly the battery cells are tempered has a decisive influence on their service life, performance and safety. 3M has developed the high-tech liquid Novec for direct cooling of battery cells. With the system, cells with very high energy density can be built more compactly and lighter - while at the same time having a significantly longer range of the electric drive and a longer service life. By flushing with the non-electrically conductive and non-flammable Novec, the battery also receives a further safety component, because thanks to the direct cooling, rapid charging can be carried out without damaging the cells. The Upper Austrian company Kreisel Electric has already developed a compact and powerful battery using direct cooling with Novec and has used it to equip an eGolf. The result: The Kreisel battery pack increases the capacity to 55.7 kilowatt hours with the same installation space and weight, thereby improving the range of the E-Golf from 190 to over 430 kilometers.
