Mahle: New capacitor accelerates electric car charging

Mahle has introduced a new type of capacitor for hybrid and electric vehicles that enables faster charging of the traction battery. The new development has a significantly higher power density. As part of the cooling system, the capacitor, together with other components, ensures that the battery is optimally cooled during rapid charging and that damage is reliably avoided. At the same time, the new condenser provides sufficient cooling capacity for comfortable interior temperature control without taking up additional space. With the new development, Mahle wants to make electric vehicles more suitable for everyday use and the mass market, as fast charging capability is a crucial criterion for the acceptance of electric cars.

Thanks to an optimized manufacturing process, the capacitor has a flatter design. At the same time, the weight was reduced, the susceptibility to corrosion was reduced and the amount of refrigerant required was reduced. “We are convinced that with this capacitor we will give the development of electric vehicles a further boost,” says Laurent Art, head of advance development for thermal management at Mahle.
