Mahle brings fast charging technology

The technology group Mahle grew faster than the global automotive market in the period from January to June 2021. Group sales increased by 36 percent, adjusted for exchange rate effects, to around 5.7 billion euros. The electronics and mechatronics sector recorded the highest growth. “We have achieved the turnaround we were aiming for,” says Michael Frick, Chairman of the Group Management Board. An important success factor is the high expenditure on research and development, which amounts to around six percent of sales. More than 80 percent of this goes into future technologies related to climate-neutral drives.

New fast charging solutions

At the leading trade fair IAA, Mahle is showing its wide range of products on the subject of mobility, from charging technology to battery systems and electric motors. “We accompany the energy flow through the entire vehicle,” said Group Research and Advance Development Manager Martin Berger. With the “chargeBIG POWER” system, Mahle is introducing fast charging stations with outputs of up to 750 kW. In order not to put too much strain on the vehicle battery, the temperature in the battery cells must be evenly distributed. “Mahle has achieved a breakthrough here: We were able to significantly push the boundaries of fast charging by using immersion cooling as a completely new solution,” says Berger. A non-conductive coolant flows around the cell, the electrical cables and all connecting elements of the battery. This lowers the maximum temperature and improves the distribution of heat in the battery cell. This means that it can be charged in just a few minutes without affecting the lifespan of the battery. Mahle expects a market launch from 2025.
