Magna makes headlights disappear

The exterior lighting of a vehicle is both an indispensable safety feature and an important differentiating feature in vehicle design. With the “Breakthrough Lighting” system, automotive supplier Magna is now introducing a new lighting technology that combines the company's know-how in the areas of exterior and lighting. The innovative lighting solution is used in thermoplastic tailgates and offers new options for individualization and interaction for vehicle users. Magna plans to bring the technology to series production in 2023.

“Breakthrough Lighting enables greater design freedom and offers more options for brand differentiation,” said Grahame Burrow, Global President of Magna Exteriors. “With significant momentum in the industry for electrified and autonomous vehicles, we expect the desire to seamlessly integrate sensors and lighting elements into exterior components to increase.” He sees Magna's competitive advantage in the bundling of expertise in the areas of exterior and lighting at an early stage in the vehicle development and design process. The light and design effects, which only become visible after screening, serve to ensure safety and visibility as well as the communication of the vehicle with its surroundings. Breakthrough Lighting technology is applicable to thermoplastic material surfaces such as polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyolefins.
