Light and shadow in the government program

ARBÖ Generalsekretär Gerald Kumnig

“Increasing the organic content of fuel, continuing to promote the purchase of electric cars, the public transport billion, a national booking platform for public transport tickets and also the Austria Ticket are measures that are important for the greening of mobility,” says Gerald Kumnig, ARBÖ General Secretary, who sees positive approaches in the government program. The fact that the issues of fuel tourism, truck tolls, airline ticket taxes and shipping traffic are being addressed is also to be welcomed. However, it remains to be seen whether all of these planned measures will not be implemented at the expense and solely on the backs of drivers. “It is to be feared that private transport will be asked to pay a lot and that the euros will just be taken out of drivers’ pockets,” said Kumnig, and continued: “We will under no circumstances accept that if this happens.” The renewed increase in the standard consumption tax sends the wrong signal to the automobile club. On the one hand, vehicles with the most modern EURO VI d emissions standard should be given an advantage, and on the other hand, the Nova will be increased. “This doesn’t seem very well thought out, because the Nova only applies when you buy a new car that has the latest emissions standards,” Kumnig points out a contradiction in the government program. In addition, the chosen wording “advantage of vehicles of the most modern vehicle generation EURO VI d” leaves enormous scope for interpretation, because it cannot be ruled out that driving bans will then occur for all other vehicles with lower emissions standards.
