Kia: electric car offensive

Kia has announced further details on its growth strategy in the European electric vehicle market. The current e-offensive is based on the global medium- to long-term strategy “Plan S” presented in January, which, in addition to drive electrification, also includes the business areas of mobility services, connectivity and automated driving and with which Kia is gradually aiming for a leading role in the future automotive industry. In Europe, the brand sold almost 7,000 pure electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2020, 75 percent more than in the same period last year. This means that the electric share of Kia sales doubled to 6.0 percent (first quarter of 2019: 2.9 percent); In total, Kia sold around 113,000 vehicles across Europe from January to March.

The share of electric vehicles at Kia is also continuously increasing in Austria. While in the previous year the share of electric cars in the overall market was 2.7%, in 2019 the share of electric cars in Kia's sales was around twice as high at 5.5%. In the first quarter of the current year, the difference between Kia and the overall market in terms of new registrations was even greater: 11% of all newly registered Kia were electric cars, and in the overall market the electric share was just over 4%.

With the e-Niro and e-Soul models, Kia offers two long-range electric vehicles in Europe that are fully suitable for everyday use (e-Niro up to 455 km, e-Soul up to 452 km). The brand plans to expand its range of battery-electric vehicles to eleven models - including new SUVs and MPVs - by 2025. Many of these electric vehicles will also come onto the market in Europe. The first model of Kia's next electric generation will kick off in 2021: an electric crossover that is based on a new platform designed specifically for electric drive technologies, has a range of more than 500 kilometers and whose battery can be charged in less than 20 minutes. Kia aims to increase its global annual electric vehicle sales to 500,000 units by 2026. In Europe, the electric share of Kia's total sales is expected to grow to over 20 percent by then.
