Buying used electric cars is not an option for many
More than half of car buyers still cannot imagine purchasing a used electric vehicle in 2025. This is shown by the current DEKRA/Ipsos study “Used cars in Germany 2025”.

Buying used electric cars is not an option for many
For 64 percent of those surveyed, buying a used electric car is “not at all” or “not at all” an option – a slight increase compared to 2023 (59 percent). Only 19 percent would “definitely” or “very probably” choose a used electric vehicle.
The biggest hurdles remain doubts about battery performance (43%) and range anxiety (41%). A lack of charging infrastructure (27%) and unclear residual values (24%) also slow down trust. A quarter of those surveyed have basically no interest in electric vehicles.
“The results show that a lot of educational work is still needed before the used market for electric vehicles takes off,” says Jann Fehlauer, Managing Director of DEKRA Automobil GmbH. What is crucial is transparency about the technical condition - especially about the battery.
According to Helmut Geil, Managing Director of DEKRA Austria, battery capacity is the central value factor: "Our test procedure provides a precise picture of the battery's health status in just 15 minutes. This creates security when buying and selling used electric vehicles."
