iPhone producer presents electric cars
With e-mobility, established car companies are facing more and more competition from newcomers to the tech sector. Now also from Apple partner Foxconn.

iPhone producer presents electric cars
The technology group Hon Hai Precision Industry, better known as Foxconn, is joining the car manufacturers as announced. The Taiwanese company, which acts as a contract manufacturer for giants such as Apple, has now presented three electric car prototypes: a sedan, an SUV and a bus.
Models are called E, C and T
Foxconn founder Terry Gou drove the first prototype, the “Model E” sedan, himself. Foxconn developed the Model E sedan, which is intended for sophisticated demands, together with the Italian design office Pininfarina. Its range should be 750 km and the car should be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds.
The “Model C” off-road vehicle is scheduled to come onto the market in Taiwan in early 2023 and will cost the equivalent of around 30,000 euros. The Model C is the first car built on the new platform developed by Foxconn. It is 4.64 m long and has a wheelbase of 2.86 m. The SUV should be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and a full battery charge will last 700 km. It can accommodate up to seven people.
The third car is a bus: the “Model T”. It is said that it could be used in the city of Kaohsiung in the south of the country as early as the beginning of 2022.
According to its own information, Foxconn invested around ten billion Taiwan dollars (a good 300 million euros) in the development of electric cars in 2020 alone. Investments would increase even further in the next two years.
Foxconn has already founded a joint venture with the Taiwanese Yulon Motor Group called Foxtron for the production of electric cars, and the company also recently bought the American start-up Lordstown Motors in order to be able to use its car factory in the US state of Ohio. They also want to develop a joint car with the electric car manufacturer Fisker.
1.3 million employees
The cars now presented are intended to show the potential in research and development as well as in production. There is always speculation about a collaboration in the car market with Apple. Foxconn is currently producing iPhones for Americans. The numbers behind Hon Hai Precision/Foxconn are impressive: the company employs more than 800,000 people in Taiwan alone and around 1.3 million worldwide. In terms of size, this roughly corresponds to the population of cities like Prague or Munich.
