The collaboration between the two companies extends across the entire life chain of a high-voltage battery, from sales and charging management to the reuse and recycling of the batteries. The aim is to use the batteries across their entire value chain, which is also known as “Battery as a Service” (BaaS) and includes both leasing and rental services. An optimal design of the batteries should also improve their use in electric vehicles and at the same time their reuse options. To start the cooperation, batteries from the Kia e-Niro will first be collected and checked. Another focus is on battery recycling, in which economically valuable metals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt are extracted. The aim is to make the entire process more environmentally friendly. In addition to the partnership with SK Innovation, Hyundai Motor Group works with other global players such as Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Wärtsilä, OCI and Hanwha Solutions, which specialize in the reuse of electric vehicle batteries.
