Hands off the wheel
At the end of July, the ÖAMTC driving technology center in Teesdorf became the first venue for the “Self Driving Track Days” in Austria.

In addition to a series of lectures on the topic of autonomous driving, there were contributions from international experts and presentations from local research projects. The Institute of Vehicle Technology at Graz University of Technology and the “virtual vehicle” research center, also located in Graz, were represented. On the test track, the researchers demonstrated a Ford Mondeo that had been converted for autonomous driving. The functional safety of autonomous driving systems was also discussed. John Birch, chief engineer in the functional safety department at Horiba Mira, is convinced that driving safety with autonomous systems will be greatly improved in the future. There was already enough enthusiasm for the subject among those present, as the first “Self Driving Track Days” on Austrian soil showed.
