A top-class panel discussed “eCall – European emergency call – please wait?” at the GSV forum. about the obstacles to implementation. Main problem: The comprehensive technical infrastructure will not be available in all EU countries by then. In the interests of road safety, a further postponement of the introduction of eCall is not to be welcomed, as this could save around 2,500 road deaths per year across the EU. The postponement is not that impractical for the automotive industry, as they can continue to work on revenue-generating services and bring further developments to the car until the introduction. There is also a fundamental question that still needs to be clarified: Who owns the data collected via the networked system? The topic of eCall remains exciting.
