Big differences in quality: three fail – five seats receive good”

The ÖAMTC, together with international partner organizations, tested 16 current child seat models for safety, operation, ergonomics and pollution. No product received the top grade of “very good”, five models were rated “good”, eight were rated “satisfactory” and three were rated “unsatisfactory”.

The test showed clear differences, particularly in terms of safety. The Britax Römer Kidfix Pro emerged as the best model, closely followed by the Axkid Up, both suitable for children between the ages of four and twelve. When it comes to seats for small children up to around 18 months, the Joie i-Level Pro and Joie i-Level Pro + i-Base Encore models with rotating ISOFIX base station were impressive.

Three products stood out negatively: the seat shells of the Chipolino Olympus i-Size and the Reecle 360 (ZA i-Size) came loose in the crash test and were thrown through the vehicle. According to ÖAMTC technician Steffan Kerbl, this poses a significant risk of injury. In addition, the flame retardant TCPP, which is considered to be potentially carcinogenic, was detected in the Chipolino seat. The Maxi-Cosi Nomad Plus also received a “not sufficient” rating because it contained the pollutant PFOA above the EU limit.
