Five cars in the Green NCAP test

As part of the Green NCAP, the ÖAMTC and its partners examined new vehicles and drive types for their environmental friendliness. VW ID.5, BMW 2 Series Coupé, Dacia Sandero Stepway, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Ford Tourneo Connect completed the environmental test. “The crucial factors in the test are the pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions as well as the energy efficiency of the drive,” explains Max Lang, vehicle and environmental expert at the ÖAMTC.

Volkswagen ID.5:The Pro Performance model with 77 kWh battery and 150 kW output scores with impressive efficiency despite its impressive total weight of 2,100 kilograms: "The consumption values determined in the test are among the lowest that Green NCAP has measured to date," explains Max Lang, and further: "With a quick charge process of 11 kW, the overall efficiency from the power grid to the battery is over 90 percent - this shows excellent charging efficiency." Conclusion: The VW ID.5 is an exemplary example of the great advances in electric vehicle technology and secures all 5 stars in the Green NCAP rating.

BMW 220d Coupe:“Despite its conventional diesel powertrain, this BMW impresses with its performance in the Clean Air Index – in particular with its highly efficient and robust control of particle emissions,” says the ÖAMTC vehicle and environmental expert. In the more demanding tests, NOx emissions are slightly increased, but remain well below the Green NCAP limits. “Despite high performance and a lot of weight, this BMW 2 Series only needs around 5 liters per 100 kilometers,” explains Max Lang. With good average values, the BMW 220d Coupé ultimately achieved 3 green stars.

Dacia Sandero Stepway:“The car is equipped with a state-of-the-art exhaust aftertreatment system and performs above average in the Clean Air Index,” says the ÖAMTC expert. In standard on-road drive, gasoline consumption is 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. The consumption values measured were worst in the demanding highway test (at 7.8 liters/100 km). "Due to the unspectacular consumption values and the upstream CO2 emissions during fuel provision, the car only receives 3.3 out of 10 points in the greenhouse gas index. The model also performs poorly in the additional robustness tests. Conclusion: For the Dacia Sandero Stepway it is only enough for 2.5 green stars in the overall Green NCAP rating.

Mercedes Benz C180:The luxury-class mild hybrid sedan with a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine took part in the test. “However, your 48-volt mild hybrid system does not contribute to significantly lower consumption values or CO2 emissions,” explains Max Lang, and continues: “In addition, it does not qualify for additional robustness tests.” Depending on the driving situation, consumption values between 6 and 8 liters per 100 kilometers can be expected. “Although pollutant emissions still have room for improvement, they are still managed solidly,” says Lang. Conclusion: In the end, the Mercedes C180 can only shine with an average of 2.5 green stars.

Ford Tourneo Connect:The commercial vehicle from Ford has a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine from Volkswagen on board. "The body shape has a strong influence on the fuel consumption and the resulting CO2 emissions of this Ford model. This results in poor results in the energy efficiency and greenhouse gas indices," says the ÖAMTC vehicle expert. The pollutant emissions are at least lower than those of the VW Caddy 1.5 TSI - the results clearly show that this is due to the automatic transmission (instead of the manual transmission in the Caddy). Ultimately, the Ford Tourneo Connect 1.5 EcoBoost tested in the Green NCAP only received 2 green stars.
