Women love scooters

The male-dominated two-wheeler is no longer an exclusively male affair. Almost every fifth two-wheeler registered in Austria in 2018 was registered to a woman. Scooters from 125 cc were particularly popular with female customers (28% women). A total of 40,417 two-wheelers were newly registered in 2018. Although two-thirds of new registrations are still made by men, women are making further inroads into this traditionally male-dominated mode of transport. Overall, 19% of all new registrations in 2018 were for the supposedly weaker sex. These numbers are roughly at the level recorded in the two-wheeler population at the end of 2017, where 18% of all 832,219 two-wheelers were registered to women. One driver for this development is the increasing number of scooters from 125 cc, which represent the strongest new registration segment in Austria. The proportion of women on the maneuverable and trendy two-wheelers is 28% and was even higher at 30% in 2017. Scooters from the Vespa brand are particularly popular with female two-wheel riders, accounting for almost half of new scooter registrations for women (only a little more than a third for men).
