Ford is investing a billion in the Cologne location
A sigh of relief for all Ford employees at the Cologne site: The US car manufacturer is investing one billion US dollars in its expansion with the aim of establishing the Ford Cologne Eletrification Center.
“The race to electrify Europe is well underway and the Ford Cologne Electrification Center will design and manufacture our future electric vehicles for customers across Europe,” said Stuart Rowley, President of Ford Europe. “With the investment, Ford is committed to its European location for passenger vehicles in Germany and underlines its commitment to shaping the electric future.”
From 2023, Ford's first battery-electric volume model in Europe will roll off the assembly line at the Ford plant in Cologne-Niehl. At the same time, Ford is examining the possibility of producing a second purely electric vehicle in Cologne.
The technical development of the new Ford electric vehicle also takes place in Cologne, at the European Ford development center in Cologne-Merkenich. As part of the existing strategic alliance with Volkswagen, Ford will build on the Modular Electrical Construction Kit (MEB) when developing the vehicle. On the platform, Ford aims to deliver emotional, fully electric vehicles to its customers across Europe. Production of a total of around 600,000 units is planned over the entire life cycle.
The Cologne-based automobile manufacturer plans that all car models will be offered with at least one battery-electric or plug-in hybrid variant as early as 2026; From 2030, Ford will only have purely electric vehicles in its car range.
