Eurotax: 20 years of the National Code

The National Code is an absolute institution in the Austrian automotive industry: every new vehicle model, every variant and every special model is assigned a consecutive 6-digit number by Eurotax. This is the only way to record vehicles from different manufacturers with regard to their equipment variants and make them identifiable and comparable afterwards. It is not for nothing that Eurotax refers to the national code as the “DNA” of vehicle trading – a large proportion of transactions via exchanges and dealers are carried out with this number. The National Code was introduced in 1999 in order, among other things, to be able to assign and identify the vehicle type more clearly. This in turn not only enables vehicles to be clearly assigned and described, but also provides the basis for more precise statistical evaluations and, last but not least, for an accurate valuation of a vehicle.

The national code is currently transmitted to the approval database by around 75 percent of all manufacturers/importers and is then included in the registration certificate when the vehicle is registered. “The National Code is part of the Austrian automotive industry and is an integral part of it,” comments Oliver Schimek, Head of Data Development Austria/Switzerland. The vehicle owner finds the national code in the registration certificate, our customers find it in all of our products. The National Code links the vehicle and all transactions around it. We are proud to provide such an integral part of the market!”
