The EU Commission is against a combustion engine deadline
EU Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton does not believe in banning the production of internal combustion engines in the EU. What is crucial is that the EU goal of climate neutrality is achieved in 2050, the Frenchman told the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten”.
In doing so, he rejected a corresponding request from several EU transport ministers, including Austria's Leonore Gewessler. Breton said that the electric car will play an important role in achieving climate neutrality, "but fuel cells and synthetic fuels are also in demand. Politicians would be wise to give companies a free hand here."
Breton, however, has other specific EU requirements in mind, namely in the area of refueling and landing infrastructure for cars with alternative drives. “I would like the member states to receive binding guidelines for the development of an infrastructure for alternative drives,” he said.
