 According to Statistics Austria, almost seven million motor vehicles were registered for traffic in Austria as of December 31, 2019. that is 1.5% or 100,626 vehicles more than a year earlier. Passenger cars, the most important vehicle type (72.0%), accounted for around 5.04 million units. That's 1.2% more than on the previous year's reporting date.

Auf Pkw, die anteilsmäßig wichtigste Fahrzeugart (72,0%), entfielen rund 5,04 Millionen Einheiten. Da sind um 1,2% mehr als noch zum Vorjahresstichtag.

More than 5 million cars for the first time

In Lower Austria, 1,102,464 cars (share: 21.9%) were registered, followed by Upper Austria (947,293 cars; share 18.8%), Styria (767,561 cars; share 15.2%) and Vienna (714,960 cars; share 14.2%). Burgenland had the lowest number of cars with 198,772 (share: 3.9%). Increases were observed in all federal states, with the car population recording the highest increase in Upper Austria (+1.5%) and the lowest increase in Vienna (+0.8%). With 675 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, Burgenland had the highest level of motorization of all federal states, followed by Lower Austria (654), Carinthia (648), Upper Austria (636), Styria (616) and Salzburg (567). The federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg (544 each) and Vienna (374) were below the Austria-wide motorization rate of 566 cars per 1,000 inhabitants (provisional population level as of January 1, 2020). 
The number of diesel-powered cars fell by 0.1% to 2.77 million (2018: +0.2%), while those with gasoline engines (including flex fuel) rose by 1.9% to around 2.18 million (2018: +2.8%). Electric cars recorded an increase of 41.7% (2018: +42.5%) to 29,523 vehicles. Passenger cars with combined operation (hybrid) also increased (petrol/electric: +33.9%; diesel/electric: +150.6%). There were also increases in cars powered by natural gas (+10.0%) and hydrogen (fuel cell; +70.8% and +17 vehicles, respectively).
