Decree to clarify §57a vehicle class L
In connection with the extension of the assessment deadlines for class L vehicles, the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology may announce the following for clarification:

Decree to clarify §57a vehicle class L
1. General:
With the 37th KFG amendment, BGBl.
The previous annual assessment period for vehicles in class L was abandoned in favor of a rule of 3 years after the first registration, 2 years after the first assessment, and then annually.
The new regulation applies from March 1st, 2020 and is also applicable to vehicles that have already been registered (Section 132 Paragraph 34 Z 2 KFG).
2. Deadline calculation:
The deadlines for recurring assessments must be calculated from the time the vehicle is first registered. Even if an annual assessment has already taken place due to the previous regulation.
For example:
The vehicle was first registered in April 2018. The first assessment took place in April 2019. An assessment sticker for April 2020 was issued. According to the new regulation, the deadlines must be calculated from the first registration of the vehicle, which is why the first assessment (after 3 years) is due in April 2021. In this case, a correction sticker with perforation 04/2021 must be issued upon request. After the assessment in April 2021, the next assessment would then be carried out in April 2023 (2 years after the first assessment) and annually thereafter.
3. Badge exchange:
The question of whether a sticker can be exchanged must be assessed based on the date the vehicle was first registered. Due to the new deadlines that also apply to vehicles that have already been registered, the first assessment appointment would have to be carried out after 3 years, the next assessment appointment after 2 years and annually thereafter. Accordingly, either an assessment must be carried out or a sticker must be exchanged without carrying out an assessment in order to make the longer assessment period that now applies apparent.
If the stickers that have already been attached do not comply with the new assessment deadlines, they may not be “extended” but must be exchanged for stickers punched according to the new deadlines.
Owners of class L vehicles, for which a longer inspection interval now applies, have the option of applying for an exchange sticker at a registration office. Applying for an exchange sticker is only possible at the insurance approval offices, not also at the authorized assessment bodies (§ 57a KFG bodies).
