A bang for more security

The compact Pyrofuse component developed by Rheinmetall's Sensors and Actuators division wins the prize in the New Energy category. Rheinmetall's high-voltage pyrofuse disconnects the battery or DC charger in the event of an accident or a short circuit, thereby reducing potential dangers for vehicle occupants and rescue workers. The system ensures the safe operation of battery-electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fuel cell-powered vehicles (FCEV). It has an ultra-fast response time of under one millisecond and cuts off power instantly.

Efficient component

The safety component from Rheinmetall is designed for an operating voltage of 450 to 1000 volts direct voltage (DC) and reliably isolates high currents of up to 30 kiloamperes (kA) at temperatures of up to 120 °C. The Pyrofuse system is a leader in its field in terms of internal electrical resistance (<30 μ Ohm) and also reduces power losses and thermal self-heating. Further advantages include the low weight and cost-effective design as well as the ability to switch off short-circuit currents without the escape of conductive and hot gases. In addition, the system is also available with an integrated current sensor, which saves costs, installation space and assembly effort and simplifies the adaptation of the components. Rheinmetall has many years of expertise in pyrotechnics and produces, among other things, airbag detonators and seatbelt tensioners with pyrotechnic solutions that react immediately in the event of danger, controlled by sensors.
