Automotive supplier Hella has developed a digital, smartphone-based car key that enables completely hands-free vehicle access while meeting the highest security standards.

Hellas Smart Car Access, which is based on ultra-wideband technology (UWB), will go into series production within the next two years. With the smartphone-based car key, the car can be opened and closed completely hands-free and the engine can also be started without having to pick up a classic radio key or smartphone. From a distance of 50 meters, the device is automatically recognized by the vehicle. As soon as the driver comes within two meters of the car, it is unlocked. The engine itself can only be started when the smartphone is inside the vehicle. At the same time, access authorizations to the vehicle can be digitally managed and shared based on the Hella Smart Car Access System, for example for car sharing offers or for fleet operators. To activate additional comfort or individualization functions, such as welcome or interior lighting, personalizable information can also be stored in the smartphone.
Proven wireless technology
In order to implement the functionalities of Smart Car Access simply, reliably and safely, Hella uses ultra-wideband technology, which is already used as standard in new smartphones for short-range communication. It is characterized by high-precision, centimeter-accurate location and also prevents the risk of relay attacks, i.e. the unauthorized opening of a vehicle through radio extension. At the same time, the technology ensures that Hella's system solution does not necessarily require an app and continues to function even in situations without a network or Internet connection. The system solution is compatible with both Android and iOS operating systems.
