The drive of the future
Survey among car dealers and workshops: Which drive will be number 1 in new registrations in 10 years?

The drive of the future

The discussions about compliance with pollutant limits, especially a. in diesel engines, continue and take their toll: In Austria, the proportion of new diesel registrations has been declining since the beginning of the year. Volvo is drawing conclusions and announced in May that it would stop developing new diesel engines. But what does this mean for the future of the Austrian car market in the medium term? Which type of drive will be number 1 in terms of new registrations in ten years?
45% of the dealers and workshops surveyed assume that the gasoline engine will take over the top position. Despite major criticism, the diesel remains at the same level as the electric drive, and the hybrid also achieves a comparable value. These are clear signs that, according to industry estimates, the transition to emission-free mobility will take longer than advocates of the rapid transition would like. 6% expect a bright future for fuel cells and see them at the forefront in ten years. In the medium term, there are still doubts about the suitability of alternative drives for the masses, although costs, trust in the technologies and infrastructure are likely to be the main obstacles for car buyers, which both manufacturers and politicians need to reduce.
