Damper replacement only in pairs
Bilstein recommends always replacing shock absorbers and suspension springs in pairs to eliminate safety risks.

Damper replacement only in pairs
If a shock absorber or suspension strut fails due to wear, defect or accident, the counterpart on the other side of the axle should always be replaced. “Although this is not stipulated by law, it is required by technical expertise,” explains Rainer Popiol, head of the Bilstein Academy. The background is easy to understand for the layperson and can therefore be convincingly conveyed to the workshop customer: Like tires, shock absorbers wear with every kilometer traveled - extremely slowly, but steadily. As a result, the damping force decreases more and more. If you were to use a brand new damper at the peak of its performance with an older model on the same axle, an imbalance would result. Even small differences are enough to disrupt the finely balanced system of a chassis. “The older damper may still be in good condition, but it no longer has the same damping force as the new part and thus causes unrest in the driving behavior,” explains Popiol.
