Bosch: Cloud is supposed to protect electric car batteries

Stress causes cells to age faster: What genetic researchers have long since proven for body cells also applies to the battery cells of electric cars. Because with age, the performance and capacity of the batteries and thus the range of the electric vehicles decrease. To ensure that batteries last longer, Bosch is developing new cloud services that complement vehicle battery management. "Bosch is bringing the batteries of electric cars into the cloud. With new data-based services, we are significantly improving the performance and service life of the batteries," says Markus Heyn, Managing Director of Robert Bosch GmbH. Smart software functions in the cloud continuously analyze the condition of the battery and take measures against cell aging. This is intended to reduce wear and tear on the most expensive component of an electric car by up to 20 percent. Real-time data from the vehicle and its surroundings play a crucial role in this. The cloud services also use this data to optimize each individual charging process and to show drivers tailor-made tips on how to drive in a battery-conserving manner directly in the vehicle display. The first customer of the new services, which Bosch summarizes under the umbrella term “Battery in the Cloud”, is the leading Chinese mobility provider DiDi.

What is the difference between Bosch cloud services and classic battery management systems?
Current battery management systems embedded in the vehicle monitor and control the battery cells, ensuring safe operation and an even charge status of all cells. However, the performance and lifespan of the battery depends on numerous factors, such as the frequency of charging and discharging, the type of charging, driving style and external factors such as temperature. Bosch is therefore developing cloud services for the battery that complement classic battery management systems in the vehicle.
