BMW secures microchip supply

The BMW Group is taking new approaches to working with suppliers and is intensively engaging with the supplier network for strategically important components. In order to secure the supply of semiconductors in the long term, the company has entered into a direct agreement with the microchip manufacturer Inova Semiconductors and Globalfoundries, a manufacturer of high-performance semiconductors. Through the agreement, the BMW Group secures the supply of several million microchips per year. The microchips are used in the ISELED smart LED technology co-developed by the BMW Group, which is being used for the first time in the BMW iX and will be rolled out in other models.

"We are deepening the partnership with our suppliers at important nodes in the supplier network and synchronizing our capacity planning directly with semiconductor manufacturers. In this way, we improve planning security and transparency about required volumes for everyone involved and secure our semiconductor requirements in the long term," says Andreas Wendt, BMW AG Board Member for Purchasing and Supplier Network.
