The government's "speeder package" provides for stricter measures for speeding. Green transport policy is becoming increasingly expensive for our industry. It is urgently time to bring in more sense of proportion and less ideology.

Who among us car fans doesn't drive too fast? Even. This is what happens. The punishments for this hurt, but they rarely hurt. Now the speeders should – once again – get more into the car. The penalty range is increased – to up to 5,000 euros. Ouch. The minimum period of withdrawal for driving license is doubled – to one month. Illegal street racing is classified as “particularly dangerous conditions”. The driver's license will then be gone for up to six months. In the event of extreme speed, the vehicle should be confiscated. As is so often the case with the current government: there are no details about the confiscation - announcement policy.

With respect: what's that supposed to mean? Am I against higher penalties? No. Anyone who thinks they have to play racing drivers in public spaces should pay properly. But if expropriation of the vehicle is on the table, then the (not yet) vaccinated person goes with it. Drivers are still the nation's milk cow. We pay significantly more for cars than our German neighbors (keyword NoVA, general vehicle taxation) and then the car is taken away from you? The reason: A car then becomes a weapon.

That's right, a car is dangerous - in the wrong hands. That's why you have to get a driver's license, take an exam, and drive to perfection. Only then can you get into a car indefinitely and at any time. Jeder Verkehrstote sei einer zu viel – sagt die Politik. Correct. But according to logic, you shouldn't sell a kitchen knife or even a chainsaw in a supermarket or hardware store for a few euros. Because in the wrong hands these are also weapons. Last year, 338 people died in road traffic accidents - according to the Interior Ministry. A good third are said to be due to excessive speed.

I live around the corner from a school – 30 zone. I haven't seen a police officer there in decades. Next to it is a busy street and a zebra crossing through which the children have to go to afternoon care, also a 30 zone. Guess how often there is a control body there.

The fact is: increases alone are not traffic safety measures, but a very cheap trick to improve the state budget. Where are the steering measures? I expect more checks in front of schools, in places where accidents happen more often. I expect more generous controls for alcohol and cell phone use while driving. I expect license plates for urban cyclists who regularly speed through the zebra crossing at the intersection in front of my front door faster than any car - without control, without consideration. The green part of the federal government has been declaring war on cars for years. That should also be respected, freedom of expression and such. But if you mention road safety as a goal, then please work in exactly this direction and not pass the buck to drivers. Enough now!
