Axalta renews contract with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team
Axalta has renewed its contract as official team supplier with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team. The reigning FIA Formula 1 Constructors World Champion, who secured the title for the sixth time in a row at the end of the 2019 season and set a new world record, has relied on the individual support and tailor-made product range of Spies Hecker, a global refinish brand from Axalta, for more than six years. Axalta works very closely with the team's paint shop in Brackley, England, to ensure a lightweight and durable design paint finish on the race cars that can withstand the extreme conditions of the track while looking spectacular. The 2020 design livery, unveiled in February in London, England, which according to the FIA could be seen on track at a race later this season, features a striking innovation: the additional color of burgundy red. The introduction of the new color is thanks to INEOS, the new “Principal Partner” of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. Burgundy is the color of the company's sports department, which also includes a Tour de France team and an America's Cup team.
Andrew Moody, Head of Paint and Graphics Department at the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, explains: "The burgundy paint is not as easy to apply as it might seem. There is a five-color transition from burgundy to black to master and the burgundy areas are outlined by a very thin black outline and a silver outline. In addition, the INEOS name is painted in white. Overall a very complex paint job, but we can do it rely entirely on Spies Hecker.”
Axalta's involvement in Formula 1 is at the core of the company's decades-long partnerships with racing in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America. These partnerships enable Axalta to demonstrate its technology and product innovations while deepening its commitment to all areas of motorsports, including: B. at major events such as NASCAR, WEC, but also at Formula Student races.
