AutoScout24: Austrians most willing to buy in Europe
At the end of April/beginning of May, AutoScout24 surveyed 3,600 private users of the platform in Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium to what extent the current Covid-19 situation affects their purchasing behavior.

AutoScout24: Austrians most willing to buy in Europe

First things first: the results are promising. For 67 percent of Austrian users, the crisis has no impact on their purchasing intention - they still want to buy the car they want. Almost 60 percent say that the crisis also has no impact on the planned vehicle budget. Mobility with your own car has become significantly more important for all Europeans. The private car has become more important for almost two thirds of Austrians (63 percent), with the Belgians achieving the highest value at 74 percent. For users, the car represents maximum autonomy and flexibility. Almost all Italians (84 percent) avoid using public transport; the figure is similarly high in Belgium (82 percent). In Austria there are 62 percent who prefer not to take public transport, in Germany 69 percent and in the Netherlands 71 percent. Two thirds of Italians and Belgians (69 percent) are currently also ruling out using a rental car or car sharing services. In all other countries, more than half of those surveyed said that a rental car is currently out of the question.
Attitude towards buying a car
What about the buyer side? When it comes to buying a vehicle, 28 percent of Austrians want to postpone their car purchase until after Corona. However, the majority of respondents are not unsettled by Covid-19: at 67 percent, the clear majority say that they still want to buy a car. This puts Austria in the top spot among the five European countries. For 62 percent of Austrian users with existing purchase intentions, the planned budget remains unaffected by the crisis. You would like to continue to spend the planned amount on your dream vehicle. For one percent, the importance of cars seems to have increased so much that they now want to spend more than before the crisis. In Italy the number of people willing to buy has shrunk to 58 percent and in Belgium the decline to 54 percent is also clearly noticeable. In these two countries, Covid-19 has also meant that the budget for buying a car has become smaller for almost half of potential buyers.
Europeans are now more likely to want to buy cars online
Clearly, the importance of digital tools and online purchasing has increased. Almost 40 percent of Austrians can now imagine buying a vehicle online. The willingness to buy digitally has changed most for the better in Italy - more than half say yes to buying online. 32 percent of Germans, 39 percent of Belgians and 29 percent of Dutch people have also changed their attitude towards digital purchasing and see it as a good option in the future.
