AutoScout24: 44 percent would buy alternative drives

At the end of May 2020, according to Statistics Austria, just over five million cars were registered in Austria. The majority still drive with diesel (55 percent) or gasoline (43 percent). Hybrid drives make up just 1.2 percent, electric cars 0.6 percent and natural gas 0.1 percent. But when purchasing a new car, 44 percent already say yes to hybrid, electric and hydrogen cars. However, a range of 500 kilometers and more is expected.

Hybrid and electric drives would be the winners

Even if many Austrians would still rely on the classic types of fuel when buying a car, it is clear that alternative types of drive could benefit significantly. 30 percent would again prefer gasoline and a quarter would prefer diesel as a fuel source. But 18 percent of those surveyed would already choose a hybrid drive, 16 percent would choose an electric drive and 10 percent would choose hydrogen. The hybrid drive scores above average among people who think intensively about climate change as well as among 50 to 65 year olds and the Viennese. Electric drives are also favored by car owners who are concerned about the climate or who have a higher level of education. Hydrogen, on the other hand, is considered more often than average, especially in western Austria and by people who travel more than 20,000 kilometers per year by car.

Range is still an exclusion criterion

Even though only about one in ten car owners categorically rule out buying a car with an alternative drive, there is still one issue that determines the actual purchase - and that is range. Only 13 percent would be satisfied with a range of less than 250 kilometers; for 43 percent, the alternative type of drive must be able to cover at least 500 kilometers. 35 percent are even of the opinion that 800 kilometers or more have to be indoors to be a real alternative. Young drivers between the ages of 18 and 29 are more willing to compromise here - and those who care deeply about the climate.
