An analysis by Wiener Städtische shows that Austrians have been turning to ever more powerful cars over the last ten years.

Cars are becoming more and more powerful

The trend among Austrian drivers is very clear: they are buying more and more powerful vehicles. The horsepower currently averages 120 hp. In 2010, the Austrian average was just under 100 hp. This corresponds to an increase of 20 percent over the past ten years. This is shown by the data from Wiener Städtische Versicherung.

"Above all, Austrians want safety on the roads and are turning to ever heavier and therefore more powerful cars. Neither the financial and economic crisis nor the climate debate could change this development."says Doris Wendler, CEO of Wiener Städtische Versicherung.

Regional differences

There is a clear upward trend across Austria, but there are clear regional differences.“A look at the federal map shows it clearly: Vienna and Vorarlberg are the PS strongholds in Austria.”says Doris Wendler. The Viennese drive the most powerful cars in Austria with an average of 129.0 hp, closely followed by the people of Vorarlberg with 127.9 hp. The Salzburgers are in third place with an average of 123.6 hp. Bringing up the rear are the Upper Austrians and Carinthians, who have an average of 114.0 hp and 114.1 hp under the hood, respectively.
A look back shows that in 2010, Viennese and Vorarlbergers drove the most powerful cars on Austria's roads with 108.0 hp and 101.8 hp respectively. At the time, the Carinthians were at the bottom of the federal state rankings with 94.1 hp.

An exciting picture emerges when you look at the CO2-Emissions throws. Normally the CO increases2emissions, the higher the horsepower. This was also the case after 2010, when emissions jumped from 138 g/km to 156 g/km. Since then, the emissions numbers have fallen again and are not reflected in the horsepower numbers.
Last year the CO2Emissions have almost reached the level of 2010 and are at 141 g/km.
